What Is a Minor Mutual Fund Account? (No Jargon)
Guardian folios. Minor PAN. SEBI circulars. Let's cut through all of it in plain English.
You've Googled "how to invest for my child" and come back more confused than before. Guardian folios. Minor PAN. SEBI circulars. It's a lot. Let's cut through all of it.
The simple version
A minor account is an investment account where your child is the legal owner and you — the parent — manage it on their behalf until they turn 18. That's it. Your child owns it. You operate it.
Is this actually allowed in India?
Yes. SEBI explicitly permits minor mutual fund accounts. A 2023 circular even made it easier — you can now use your own bank account for the SIP mandate. No separate account needed for your child.
What documents do you need?
Less than you think:
- Child's birth certificate
- Your PAN + Aadhaar
- Your bank account details
No child PAN. No child bank account. Your KYC is enough to start.
What happens at 18?
The account converts to a regular adult account in their name. Simple KYC update. And then the wealth is fully, legally, unambiguously theirs.
Not a gift. Not a transfer. Wealth they've owned since the day you started.
One account. Their name. Yours to manage. Theirs to own.
